Aircraft recycler lands on competence scheme

An aircraft recycler has become one of the first companies in the waste sector to be accredited under a competence scheme for organisations rather than individuals. Leicestershire-based ARRCAM has qualified under the new Competence Management System, developed by the Energy & Utility Skills as a scheme to demonstrate technical competence. CMS enables businesses to satisfy the Environmental Permit requirements for competence on a corporate basis rather than requiring a qualified individual. Certification was carried out by SGS, the inspection, verification, testing and certification company. It followed application of the processes by 360 Environmental as part of the implementation of ARRCAM's Permit and ISO14001. Peter O'Carroll, ARRCAM's managing director, said: " This ensures that as a company we are all focused on maintaining environmental excellence and not reliant on one person for on-going technical competence". CMS is a scheme approved by Defra and the Welsh Government to demonstrate technical competence. The United Kingdom Accreditation Service is undertaking a pilot assessment programme for ISO/IEC 17021:2011 accreditation with the BSI and NQA certification bodies.
