Maharashtra has decided to increase the retirement age of honorary professors in government medical colleges from 65 to 70.

"The Medical Council of India has enhanced the retirement age of medical teachers from 65 to 70. Even the state government has enhanced the age from 58 to 62,” said a senior official.

“Honorary professors' retirement age, it was felt, should be enhanced from 65 to 70 as they play a crucial role in providing medical services,'' he added.

Nearly 1,500 honorary teaching staff in 16 medical colleges in Maharashtra get an honorarium of only Rs 1,500 per month, so there will be no financial burden on the state exchequer, ToI reported.

The official added that for several decades, honorary professors were the backbone of teaching colleges.
