The 30-share Sensex gained as much as 1.33%, or 278 points, in the day to 21,224.64 points, the highest since 24 January. It ended up 1.26%, or 263.08 points, at 21,209.73 points, only 274 points away from a record high. Twenty-eight of 30 Sensex stocks advanced while two declined.
Meanwhile, the National Stock Exchange’s broader 50-share Nifty ended higher 1.23%, or 76.50 points, at 6,297.95 points.
Shares of Hindalco Industries Ltd rose 7.82% to Rs.113.75, Sesa Sterlite Ltdgained 4.88% to Rs.182.80, ICICI Bank Ltd added 3.75% to Rs.1,068.30, whileAxis Bank Ltd climbed 3.29% to Rs.1,295.05.
Shares of Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries Ltd declined 0.73% to Rs.620.50, while those of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd slipped 0.45% to Rs.2,802.55.
The S&P BSE Metal index rose 3.31%, S&P BSE Bankex added 2.47%, while the S&P BSE Healthcare index declined 0.40%, the most among sectoral indices.
Bharat Heavy Electrical Ltd (Bhel) gained 2.58% to Rs.166.70 apiece after company confirmed that Life Insurance Corporation of India has acquired 4.66% stake in it from the government in a block deal on Monday.
Tata Group shares ended higher. Tata Investment Corp. Ltd surged 9.08% to Rs.461.50, Tata Chemicals Ltd jumped 8.12% to Rs.287.75, TRF Ltd added 9.05% to Rs.128.90, Tata Sponge Iron Ltd rose 6.19% to Rs.506.75, Indian Hotels Co. Ltd rose 4.37% to Rs.71.65, Tata Coffee Ltd climbed 3.12% toRs.914.15, Tata Teleservices Maharashtra Ltd rose 2.22% to Rs.7.36, Tata Communications Ltd gained 3.90% to Rs.287.50, Tata Global Beverages Ltdjumped 2.90% to Rs.140.25, Tata Elxsi Ltd added 3.35% to Rs.659.90, Tata Power Co. Ltd added 2.37% to Rs.80.05 and Titan Co. Ltd rose 2.35% toRs.254.80 on BSE.
Overnight US markets ended lower with the S&P 500 falling 0.7%, Nasdaq Composite down 0.7% and Dow Jones Industrial Average declining 0.9%.
Global markets jumped on reports that Russia has ended military exercise along its western border. Japan’s Nikkei Stock Average gained 0.47%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng ended up 0.96%, while China’s Shanghai Composite was down 0.18%.
